Medical Supply Technician

The Medical Supply Technicians will rotate assignments among the various transportation, sterilization, processing, decontamination, surgical tray assembly, reusable medical equipment processing and quality assurance functions.Duties include but not limited to:
Collection, transportation, receipt, inspection and decontamination processing of soiled instruments, equipment, and apparatus to include complex diagnostic equipment and medical apparatus by following manufacturer instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and National/VA guidance. Completely and thoroughly disassembling all parts of technical reusable medical equipment (RME) to ensure the removal of bio-burden prior to sterilization. Endoscopes will be retrieved, cleaned, monitored for quality, high level disinfection performed, transported, stored, and documentation of endoscopic scope processes completed, following manufacturer instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and National/VA guidance, Operating decontamination equipment such as but not all inclusive; washer decontaminators/disinfectors, table top and floor model ultrasonic washers, irrigators, laproscopic insulation testers, dental lube machines, automatic cart wash and tube dryers, and high level disinfectors (GUS System). Validating all cleaning of instrumentation and RME using department Standard Operating Procedures and manufacture guidelines. Regularly tests operations and cleaning of equipment for effectiveness of sterilization. The incumbent monitors performance of sterilizers for quality control by conducting bacteriological tests. Conducts daily biological monitoring of numerous different sterilizers throughout SPS. Updates the documentation tracking system with results of biological tests. Conforms to and ensures that all safety and infection control rules, regulations and requirements (e.g., dress code and traffic control procedures) in the decontamination and preparation areas are followed by all personnel working in, or entering the work area. Assembling minor and complex tray sets and instrumentation packs used for a variety of general and specialized medical and surgical procedures Assembling surgical case carts according to physician preference and computer generated picking lists for use in operating rooms. Medical Supply Technician must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
Experience:
Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work. Education:
One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; Experience/Education Combination:
Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. GS-06 (Full Performance Level):
Experience:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. 2. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. 3. Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. 4. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation. 5. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. This is the full performance level for the occupation. Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in the decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well. Disassembles the RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions. Inspects, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, Sterrad, Steris, and high level disinfecting scope reprocessors. Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment. References:

You must be able to meet the physical demands of the position. While performing duties of this job the Medical Supply Technician is frequently required to stand, walk, and bend and reach. Must be able to lift and/or move over 50 pounds. Must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Must be able to view and read information on computer screens.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
