As a Substance Use Prevention Specialist, you play a crucial role in promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing youth substance use within communities. You collaborate with schools, community organizations, and local government to implement one or more prevention strategies to address those needs.
Pay Range: $20-$26/hour
Schedule: Flexible based on client needs

Key
Responsibilities:

Implementation & Data Collection:
  • Implement evidence-based programs aimed at preventing youth substance use, violence, and other risky behaviors.
  • Develop educational initiatives that empower individuals to make informed choices regarding substance use.
  • Create engaging workshops, presentations, and awareness campaigns.
  • Collect data on program outcomes, participant engagement, and community impact.

Community Engagement:
  • Collaborate with schools, community centers, and other organizations to assess prevention needs.
  • Build relationships with community members, educators, and local leaders.
  • Facilitate community meetings and workshops to raise awareness and promote prevention efforts.
  • Participate in community coalitions and task forces related to substance use prevention.

Education and Training:
  • Conduct training sessions for educators, parents, and community members on substance use prevention.
  • Provide resources and tools to help individuals recognize risk factors and develop protective factors.
  • Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in substance use prevention.

Outreach and Awareness:
  • Organize community events, workshops, and awareness campaigns.
  • Promote prevention messages through social media, newsletters, and other communication channels.
  • Engage with schools, parents, and youth to foster a culture of prevention.

Position Requirements:
Qualified Substance Abuse Professional as defined by:
  • (a) a graduate of a college or university with a Masters degree in a human service field and has one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or (b) a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a human service field and has two years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or (c) a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a field other than human services and has four years of full-time, post bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or (d) a substance abuse prevention professional who is certified as a Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant (CSAPC) by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board and meets the above requirements as a QSAPP. Must apply for CSAPC certification within 3 months of employment and become certified within five (5) years of employment.

Other job requirements include:
  • Valid driver's license including personal vehicle insurance coverage, if applicable.
  • Emotional stability, maturity, warmth, openness and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Minimum two (2) years continuous sobriety and/or recovery from mood altering drugs. Recovery from alcohol or other drug(s) must be maintained at all times, with active involvement in recovery if applicable. Commitment to best practices and implementation of evidence-based programs, policies, and practices. Ability to perform duties physically and mentally without harm to self or others.
  • Knowledge and experience with State substance abuse/mental health systems, particularly prevention.
  • Knowledge of prevention science, local community resource and service systems functioning, and strategies leading to the propagation of prevention and health promotion services and values.
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent developmental dynamics in the context of family systems functioning. Ability to effectively deliver prevention programs to youth and adults and public presentations.

  • Drug testing
  • Education verification and other credentialing based on position requirements.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
