Overview of Job
Responsibilities:
The role of the Disability Services Assistant is to coordinate, monitor and support disability services with other content areas, service providers, and community agencies, provide staff training and development including on-site consultation, coaching, and mentoring under the guidance and direction of the Health Manager.
The support aligns with all State and Federal laws, standards and regulations.
Organize and coordinate the program's disability services effort which includes screenings and coordination of specialized services.
Work with community partners and agency staff to ensure developmental and sensory screenings of all children within 45 calendar days of enrollment.
Monitor classroom services of children with disabilities enrolled in the program.
Coordinate and process teacher referrals for special education diagnostic evaluations and obtain diagnostic reports and confirmation of disability by qualified professionals.
Coordinate the development of an IEP for children with disabilities, in conjunction with the local education agency, the child's teacher, parent/guardian, and other staff.
Ensure appropriate support services for children not eligible for school district special education services.
Develop, implement and document the transition of children from special education programs and conduct end of the year IEP reviews for children transitioning to Kindergarten.
Work with the parents, classroom staff and community resources to coordinate accommodations, adaptations, and staff training needs.
Support appropriate strategies to maximize successful inclusion of children with disabilities.
Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings to discuss children and/or families dealing with multi-issues.
Compile, prepare, and maintain child data reports on services provision and submit by established deadlines and ensure the program's computerized database and record-keeping systems for the disabilities service area are updated and maintained.
Stay abreast of all special education laws (IDEA, PL 94-142, PL 99-459) and civil rights Laws (Section 504 and Americans with a Disability Act) and the implications of these laws for Head Start programs; provide this information to staff; document mandates of IDEA and Head Start Performance Standards.
Requirements:
Comprehensive knowledge of child development, disabilities and special education for preschool children and related terminology.
Graduation from a two-year accredited technical school or community college with an Associate's degree in Social Work, Early Childhood or related field and two years of experience working in a preschool program with children with disabilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience An employee in this classification is non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime pay Pass a physical exam, TB Test, drug screen and a pre-employment and criminal background check Maintain a Criminal Background Check Qualification letter from NC DCDEE Bi-Lingual in Spanish is a plus Head Start policy requires COVID 19 Vaccination or an approved religious or medical exemption Full-Time Benefits Include:
